Dr Maritza Thompson Psychological Services
Maritza is a registered psychologist with the Australian Health Practioners Agency (AHPRA) and has over 25years experience as a psychologist. Maritza’s studies have included a Behavioural Science Degree with a double major in psychology from La Trobe University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology from RMIT. Further qualifications include research and teaching within the Department of Psychiatry at Melbourne University with the completion of her PhD in the Department of Psychology, The University of Melbourne. Her PhD focused on The Psychological Impact of Torture and Other Types of Systemic Abuse.
Maritza’s specialization and extensive experience focuses on assisting people who have been impacted by trauma. This includes trauma resulting from personal loss, sexual, psychological and/or physical abuse, torture, war and conflict, system abuse and critical incidents. Maritza is a psychologist with extensive clinical and research training in the area of trauma and cross cultural psychotherapy. This has included working with people from around the world and including Aboriginal communities. She has facilitated educational and psychotherapeutic groups within her work environments. She enjoys working with diverse cultures, she is a strong advocate for human rights and is fluent in Spanish.
Maritza’s broad experience in psychology has included employment with Community Health, Torture and Trauma Services, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Sexual Assault Services, TAFE and University Student Counselling. She has worked for The Melbourne Clinic and Essendon Private Hospital as well as having extensive experience in private practice.
Maritza works from a humanistic and client centered perspective. Eclectic in her approach incorporating narrative, schema and cognitive behavioural therapies and advocacy support. These modalities are applied to individual, couples and family therapy. Having a diverse work experience Maritza assists people with anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, domestic violence, depression, family issues, education and vocational stressors.
Her private practice client’s include a broad referral source including Medicare, Private Health Insurance, Transport Accident Commission, Workcover and Employee Assistance Programs
